DIRT in the Wild
Recently, I got a text from my kids.
They were out to lunch over the holidays and sent me a photo of a man sitting at a restaurant bar wearing a shirt that said: DIRT.
Their text said, “DIRT in the wild.” “Proud of you, Ma” And I just smiled. Because five months earlier, DIRT didn’t exist.
I had been working with Mark Hylton, Laura Beacham, and the leadership team at Gulf Stream Construction to refresh their mission, vision, and values.
Like many growing companies, their mission and vision were strong… but long. Paragraph-long and hard to recall.
Their values? A lengthy list that wasn’t actively guiding daily decisions.
So we went back to the core: What truly defines Gulf Stream at its best?
Through focused leadership workshops and stakeholder sessions across the organization, we clarified what mattered most.
The result: A one-sentence mission. A one-sentence vision. And four values no one will forget.
DIRT
Dedicated – to Doing It Right, Always
Innovative – in Every Layer
Relentless – in Quality and Safety
Trusted – Because We Earn It
Simple. Memorable. Actionable.
The official launch happened at their holiday oyster roast — complete with a massive flag flying the new mission, vision and values along with some great swag.
And now? It’s showing up around town “in the wild.”
Here’s the thing:
Values don’t stick because they’re well-written.
They stick because people see themselves in them.
They use the language.
They make decisions through them.
They wear them — literally.
That’s when culture moves from words on a wall to standards in the field.
And that’s when you know the work matters.
Excited for Gulf Stream and grateful to partner with leaders willing to do the hard work of clarity.
Because clarity isn’t about fewer words. It’s about stronger alignment.
